Exciting News for Central Coast Filmmakers, Musicians and Performers

Coastal Surge Film Festival is running its sophomore event November 2024 as part of the Central Coast’s Lakes Festival.

And this time it’s going global!

There will be two events - a music video screening & competition and a drama / documentary awards and screening evening.

Read on for the details!

Your Hosts…

Coastal Surge International Film Festival prides itself as a prestige berth for big screen content. As filmmakers themselves, Glenn Fraser and Amelia Foxton have seen their work on the biggest screens in the world - from Sydney Film Festival, Tropfest and Sundance and dozens in between. They’ve worked markets, earned grants, won awards,  and developed unique voices internationally. Your hosts appreciate the value of the cathedral experience of cinema. This isn’t an online fest - this is the real deal - playing out in one of the country’s most iconic regional cinemas, based just over an hour north of Australia’s biggest city, Sydney.

Its successful debut at the Avoca Beach Theatre in 2023 proved there is demonstrably a hunger for the Coast’s own film culture. In 2024, Coastal Surge International Film Festival will expand and play over two nights with two different audiences in mind.

We want to share our best with you. We want to bring a bit of industry glamour to the coast and - most importantly - encourage the region to speak its magic to the wider world.

There will be a red carpet, media and a fantastic mixer after the events where we can all get to know each other, exchange stories and develop lifelong international connections.

NIGHT 1

Thursday, November 7

Venue
Avoca Beach Picture Theatre

We want to see the best and most original documentary and drama content that the region has to offer and will be curating a 90 minute programme on the big screen at the sumptuous Avoca Picture House in Avoca Beach.

If you have a short film under ten minutes that you’d like screened, follow the links to us on Film Freeway and have your film submitted by our September 1 deadline. The screener can be any high quality format, but if your film is selected, it will require projection from the industry standard DCP format. The venue caters to stereo or 5.1 surround sound mixes. If you cannot supply a DCP of your film, a DCP conversion can be offered at a nominal cost for the accepted entries.

Our team will curate the top picks for the evening and the programme will be announced in October.

Trophies will be offered for:

Best International Documentary Short

Best Documentary Short Film (Regional)

Best International Narrative Short

Best Short Film (Regional)

Winners will be announced on the night, followed by a filmmakers and audience mixer at a nearby venue.

NIGHT 2

Friday, November 8

Venue
Everglades, Woy Woy

Genre: Music Videos

Venue: Everglades, Woy Woy

Coastal Surge is excited to present a unique collision of music and film with the region's inaugural music video festival and awards night where 15 - 20 of the best music clips from across the Central Coast and the Hunter will be selected to play on the big screen on the night to a packed house.

Hosted at Everglades in Woy Woy - an established venue for bands and live acts -  this event will showcase the best that the region has to offer in terms of local video production and its connection to the local live music scene.

The final winners of the night will be judged by an industry celebrity, and a music industry professional announced closer to time.

The competition is open to local video clips produced since 2020 and filmmakers and bands will be entering their work on FilmFreeway. A final fifteen or twenty works will be curated and screened on the night of Friday, 8 November on the big screen in front of an audience of diehard music fans.

 HOT DATES / HOT CLIPS

If you’re a performer or a band and you haven’t already got a clip, get to it. Entries will close midnight, Friday, October 4. Great news is that we want to help bands get clips made. We will set up a free Video Speed Dating Facebook Group - where we can introduce musos to filmmakers, directors to dub step aficionados, and singers to cinematographers. Let’s get you producing work from your imagination and grow a local community of creatives.

“Get together. Make some noise.”

AWARDS

Prizes awarded on the evening will be:

$1000 cash prize and a trophy for Best Band Video (to be shared amongst band and filmmaker)

$500 cash prize plus the Imagineer Award - a Best Director’s Trophy for Most Singular Vision in a video clip
